The main component of sapphire is alumina (Al2O3). Corundum contains trace elements such as iron (Fe) and titanium (Ti), and presents colors such as blue, sky blue, and light blue, among which the bright sky blue is the best.

Synthetic sapphire is made of pure alumina at high temperature, which is very hard and highly transparent. Chemically speaking, there is no difference between synthetic sapphire and natural crystal. Because no other elements are added, it is colorless and transparent. The original synthetic sapphire is cut into discs by a diamond tool, and then polished into a watch mirror. This may also be one of the reasons for the high cost of sapphire crystals, because the cost of these processing tools is also high. Gem-grade synthetic sapphires can come in a variety of colors, with demand and production concentrated in blue, orange, pink and red. Rich, full blue hues are the hardest to make and therefore the most expensive. Many manufacturers trying to produce blue synthetic sapphires are moving away from the industry or switching to pink, red or colorless production.

Some traditional companies that focus on industrial applications have switched to gem-grade sapphire growth because sometimes equipment has to pay a fraction of the original cost.
